Highly recommended by several friends so I felt I had to try it.
I've now been to Duarte's and while the atmosphere is described as "old time" I kinda felt the food was too. I know, I know, that is the point of a "dive" but I guess I expected amazing old-time diner food to go along with all the hype.
My artichoke soup was bland and felt like it needed some "oomph". It seemed like the classic "flour and butter" starter that just wasn't blended well or perhaps the artichokes were blended a bit too much. My pretty basic salad was swimming in dressing (which could have put it into the soup category!) and my friend's cioppino was a bit too tomato-y.
When we asked about being featured on "diners, drive in and dives" (Food Network) and the impact, we were told that monthly visitors to the restaurant cap out at about 10,000 per month. I don't know a lot about restaurants but looking at this one, it feels like a high number (if true) and probably explains a LOT.
On a good day my hunch is this is a pretty pleasant place to dine. On this given day, it wasn't my all time favorite but I'd be willing to give it a second chance (maybe when the traffic dies down to say 5,000 visitors per month!)
